Supper Clubs Within an Hour of Price County: Where the Old Fashioneds Are Sweet and the Fish Fry Is Sacred
A Wisconsin supper club is not a restaurant. It’s an institution. You arrive at 5:30, you have a brandy Old Fashioned at the bar while you wait for your table, you eat a relish tray and a bowl of French onion soup before your main course arrives, and you leave at 9:30 feeling like the world is still a place where things are done correctly.
Price County and the surrounding Northwoods have some of the best supper clubs in Wisconsin. They’re not flashy, they’re not trendy, and they don’t need to be. They’ve been doing the same thing for 30, 40, 50 years and they’ve gotten very, very good at it. Read more Price County stories from across the web.

The Supper Club Rules
1. Arrive early, eat late. Supper clubs operate on a two-phase system. Phase one: you sit at the bar and have an Old Fashioned while you wait for your table. Phase two: you eat. Skipping phase one is allowed but not encouraged. The bar is where the locals are, and the locals are where the stories are.
2. The relish tray is not a garnish. It’s the appetizer. Carrots, celery, radishes, olives, pickles, and sometimes cheese curds. Eat it. It’s free, it’s fresh, and it’s there because it’s always been there.
3. Fish fry on Friday, prime rib on Saturday. This is not a rule, it’s a calendar. Friday is for fish. Saturday is for prime rib. Sunday is for whatever’s left. Tuesday through Thursday is for people who don’t follow rules.
4. Make reservations on weekends. In summer, the supper clubs within 30 minutes of any lake fill up by 6 PM on Friday. Call ahead or prepare to wait at the bar for an hour. The bar wait is not a bad thing. See rule 1.
5. Tip like you mean it. The server who’s been working at the same supper club for 15 years knows your order before you say it. She deserves it.
