When the temperature climbs past 85 degrees in northern Wisconsin, there’s nothing better than finding a quiet spot to jump in the water. Price County has some of the best hidden swimming spots in the Northwoods — if you know where to look.
The lakes and rivers here are fed by cold springs, which means the water stays refreshingly cool even on the hottest days. Locals have been swimming in these spots for generations, and many of them remain relatively unknown to visitors.
Here are five of our favorite lesser-known swimming holes that locals love and visitors often miss.
1. The Rock Pool at Patterson Lake
Tucked away on the south shore of Patterson Lake, this natural rock formation creates a perfect little swimming hole with clear, cold water. The rocks make for great jumping spots, and the shallow area near shore is perfect for kids. On a hot July afternoon, the water temperature here is usually around 68-72 degrees — cold enough to be refreshing but warm enough to stay in for a while.
How to find it: Park at the small pull-off on County Road W just past the Patterson Lake boat landing. Follow the short trail down to the water. The pool is about a 3-minute walk from the road. Look for the large flat rock that locals use as a jumping platform.
2. The Sandbar on the North Fork of the Flambeau River
This wide, shallow section of the river creates a natural sandbar that’s perfect for wading and floating. On hot days, you’ll often find families here with coolers and lawn chairs.
Pro tip: Bring water shoes , the river bottom can be rocky in places. The best spot is right downstream from the County Road W bridge.
3. The Secret Cove on Butternut Lake
Most people go to the main beach on Butternut Lake, but if you drive around to the east side, there’s a small cove with a sandy bottom and almost no boat traffic. It’s shallow enough to stand in most places and deep enough to swim in the middle.
The cove is especially nice in the late afternoon when the sun hits the water just right.
4. The Swimming Hole at the Old Dam Site
Near the remnants of an old logging dam on the Price River, there’s a beautiful pool that’s become a local favorite. The water is surprisingly clear, and there’s even a small waterfall area when the water is running.
Note: Respect private property signs and only access via the public trail. The best time to visit is mid-week when it’s quieter.
5. The Quiet Beach on Solberg Lake
While Solberg Lake has a busy main beach, the north end has several small, unofficial beaches that are much quieter. The water here warms up nicely by mid-July, making it perfect for long swims.
This is one of our favorite spots for an evening swim as the sun goes down.

Most of them are, but always check the depth and current before letting children in the water. The rock pool at Patterson Lake and the sandbar on the Flambeau are the most family-friendly.
Do I need a parking pass or permit?
Most of these spots have free roadside parking. Just be sure not to block any driveways or private roads.
What’s the best time to go?
Weekday mornings and late afternoons are usually the quietest. Weekends can get busy, especially at the more popular spots.
Are there any spots with lifeguards?
None of these hidden spots have lifeguards. The main beaches on some of the larger lakes do during peak season, but the secret spots are all at-your-own-risk.
What should I bring?
Towels, water shoes, bug spray, and a cooler with drinks. Some of these spots have no facilities, so plan accordingly. A dry bag for your phone and wallet is also a good idea, especially if you’re swimming in deeper water.
